S1 - S3 BGE
Pupils enjoy making music by performing, listening and creating music. At S1 and S2 pupils learn to play and develop skills on keyboard, recorder, drum-kit, voice, tuned percussion and ukulele/guitar. Listening and literacy are integrated within each unit of work. Pupils also compose in a variety of styles e.g. melody for an orchestral instrument, a Scottish dance, reggae.
National 4
The National 4 Music Course enables pupils to perform music, create original music and develop knowledge and understanding of music and musical literacy. Pupils also develop an understanding of the external factors that influence composers and their works. Pupils must pass all of the following units to achieve a course award:
Performing, Composing and Understanding Music
The Added Value Unit
Perform music in a range of musical styles on another instrument at AB Grade 2 level
At National 4 level, there is no external examination.
National 5
The National 5 Music Course enables pupils to perform challenging music, create original music and broaden their knowledge and understanding of music and musical literacy. The Course also enables pupils to develop knowledge of the social and cultural factors that influence music. Pupils must pass all of the following units to achieve a course award:
Performing, Composing and Understanding Music – which is a written exam.
National 4 /5 Free Standing Unit in Performing
Although they may not have studied music since S1, pupils have the opportunity to return to music in their senior years. A free standing unit is offered to pupils who are interested in learning to play and develop skills on two instruments. Pupils must also complete a learning log and essay on their chosen performance pieces.
Higher
The Higher Music Course provides a broad practical experience of performing, creating music and develops related knowledge and understanding of music. Pupils develop their skills and creative capabilities as musicians and gain the skills they need to perform, create music and to confidently discriminate between music concepts and styles. Pupils must pass all of the following units to achieve a course award: Performing, Composing and Understanding Music – which is a written exam.
Advanced Higher
The Advanced Higher Music Course develops pupils’ skills in performing, creating, understanding and analysing music. Pupils develop the skills they need to perform challenging music with musical, technical accuracy and fluency, while realising composers’ intentions, and develop their own composing skills in sophisticated and creative ways. Pupils must pass all of the following units to achieve a course award:
Performing, Composing and Understanding Music – which is a written exam.
Supported study is offered to pupils studying music at National 5 – Advanced Higher levels at the following days/times:
Tuesday 3.40pm – 5.00pm
Wednesday 12.45pm – 1.10pm
Thursday 12.45pm – 1.10pm
Friday 2.50pm – 4.00pm
